Simple First Birthday Celebration: How We Celebrated Our Baby’s First Birthday
It’s been a little quiet here on the blog lately. I was busy preparing for a very special milestone in our family — our baby’s first birthday.
The first year of parenthood goes by incredibly fast. One moment you’re bringing your baby home, and suddenly you’re celebrating their first birthday. I wanted the day to feel special, even though we kept the celebration simple.
In the end, it was just us — the parents, both grandparents, and our two dogs — spending the day together. And that made it even more meaningful for us.
If you’re looking for simple first birthday celebration ideas, here’s what our day looked like.
Birthday Plans (and the Ones That Didn’t Happen)
Like many parents planning a first birthday, I had a few ideas in mind.
I even kept a simple checklist to make sure we didn’t forget anything, even with a low-key celebration — I’ve shared a version of it at the end of this post if you’d like to use it too.
At first, I wanted to do a 10-day birthday countdown, with something small each day — baking a mini cake, making a special breakfast, or taking a photo with a blackboard showing the days left.
But between work and daily life, that plan didn’t quite happen.
I had also imagined decorating the entire house, but in the end, I decorated just the main hall and our bedroom the day before.
Initially I felt a little disappointed, but looking back, it didn’t really matter. The day still turned out to be special.
A Sweet Birthday Morning Surprise
For the birthday morning, I planned a tiny surprise.
Since the baby crawls everywhere these days, I tied a few helium balloons at his eye level just outside our bedroom door so he would see them when he crawled out.
He noticed them… and didn’t react much at all! Babies always have their own way of responding to things. But it was still a sweet way to start the day.

A Small Family Outing
Instead of a big party, we spent the day on a family outing to a bio farm outside the city.
The farm had fields of vegetables and large sunflowers growing around the property. Visitors could also feed animals like goats, sheep, and horses.
While it was interesting to see the animals up close, I did feel their living conditions could have been better maintained. As someone who loves animals and has rescued dogs, I’m always sensitive to how animals are cared for.
Still, it was a peaceful outing and something new for the baby to experience.

A Lovely Birthday Surprise
We had lunch at the farm’s restaurant, which served vegetarian dishes made with ingredients grown there.
While we were finishing our meal, the staff surprised us by bringing out a small slice of cake and singing Happy Birthday for the baby.
It was completely unexpected and turned into one of the sweetest moments of the day.

First Birthday Cake at Home
Later in the evening, we returned home for the cake cutting.
I had baked the cake myself and shaped it into the number 1, with a simple frosting made from sweet potato and Greek yogurt. I’ve shared exactly what I used and how it turned out in a separate post.
With fairy lights on and balloons around, we cut the cake, clicked photos together, and ended the day quietly at home.
Sometimes the simplest celebrations are the most meaningful.

First Birthday Keepsakes We Made
One thing I really wanted to do was create a few keepsakes from the baby’s first year.
I made a simple First Year Milestones Board, where I wrote down little details like favourite foods, milestones, and fun facts from the past year.
Looking back at everything that happened in just twelve months felt surprisingly emotional. Since a few friends later asked how I made it, I’m thinking of turning it into a simple editable milestone board template for parents planning their baby’s first birthday.
I also made something a little different — a birthday newspaper announcing the baby turning one, written in a fun way with small “articles” about his first year.
It ended up becoming one of my favourite keepsakes, and I may turn this into an editable birthday newspaper template as well.
Along with these, both the parents and grandparents wrote letters for the baby, which will all go into a small birthday time capsule for him to read when he’s older.
What I Learned Planning a Simple First Birthday
Looking back, the day didn’t go exactly how I imagined. The countdown didn’t happen, and the decorations weren’t everywhere.
But that taught me something important: perfection isn’t what makes memories special.
Even with a simple day, there were moments that mattered:
- A balloon surprise in the morning reminded me that small gestures can bring big joy.
- A quiet outing together showed me that quality time matters more than planning a big, elaborate celebration.
- A small cake celebration at home proved that simplicity can feel just as special as a grand party.
Sometimes, that’s really all a first birthday needs.
